Italy Fire & Heat Status

Live picture: 418 deduped satellite heat locations in the last 24 h; 4 red and 9 orange weather alerts in force. Italian fire activity concentrates in the south and islands — Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, Calabria — often alongside the summer's fiercest heat. Beach evacuations by boat (Puglia, July 2026) show how fast coastal fires move.

Major wildfires in Italy right now

Active fireUpdated 16 August at 01:00 (9h ago)

Sicily is still on a fire pre-alert, Sardinia is on orange, and the red heat warning is down to Bari alone

Sicily is holding at a pre-alert for fire. The regional civil protection department issued notice number 174 on 15 August, valid from midnight for the 24 hours of today, following notice 173 for the 24 hours of Saturday 15 August. It keeps the preallerta phase across the whole island and rates the fire danger medium in all nine provinces: Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani. At that level the department's own wording is that the state of the vegetation is such that a fire would burn with high intensity and spread fast. It also carries a level 1 heat alert for Catania, Messina and Palermo, with perceived temperatures of 36, 37 and 35 degrees.

The heat is easing. The health ministry's heat-wave bulletin has one city on bollino rosso, level 3, for 16 August, and that is Bari. On 6 August every one of the 27 monitored cities was red. Level 3 means the heat can harm healthy, active people too, not only the frail. Move what you can to the early morning and treat the middle of the day as time indoors.

Sardinia publishes its own fire-danger bulletin every day, and today's, number 108, puts the island on code orange, high danger, with the regional operational phase set to attenzione rinforzata. That phrasing means what it says: if a fire starts and is not caught quickly, it can outgrow the ordinary ground crews and need the national air fleet. Read the day's bulletin before you go inland. Whatever the code says, the rules are the same: do not park on dry grass, and never drive into smoke to see what is on the other side.

One thing to plan around on the Gargano has nothing to do with fire. The SS 89 between Mattinata and Vieste has been shut since a large boulder came off the cliff above it on 5 December 2025. On 29 July the Puglia region, Anas and the Agenzia del Demanio settled who does what: Anas becomes the implementing body, taking on the design and the work to secure the rock face and reopen the road and funding the roadway itself, while the region and the property agency fund the work on the face. No reopening date has been given. If you are coming up the south side of the promontory, work out your route before you set off.

Flights are reported running, but avoid rural, forest and coastal routes near active fires; follow Protezione Civile and 112, and never enter an evacuation zone. Extreme heat is in force.
