Travel Insurance and Wildfires: What To Check Before You Go
A plain-English checklist for wildfire disruption, cancellations, evacuation and curtailment questions.
Important: do not assume wildfire disruption is automatically covered. Check your policy wording, whether the fire was a known event when you bought the policy, and whether FCDO or local authority advice affects cover.
Ask these questions before relying on a policy
- Does it cover cancellation, curtailment, missed departure, evacuation or loss of accommodation because of wildfire?
- What happens if your destination is open but your specific campsite, villa, road or ferry route is not?
- Does travelling against FCDO advice invalidate cover?
- Do you need to contact the travel provider before making an insurance claim?
- Are smoke, heat warnings and air-quality impacts covered or excluded?
