Sicily & Sardinia Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

What is happening

This is a wave of separate fires across Sicily and Sardinia rather than one event. The Sicilian peak was 22 and 23 July, when more than a hundred people were evacuated at Santo Stefano Quisquina, clinic patients were moved, and there were evacuations at Castronovo, Bivona, Carini and Villagrazia di Carini. Sardinia's heaviest day was 31 July. On 3 August the Sicilian bulletin put all nine provinces at orange pre alert and Sardinia held Cagliari at orange.

What it means if you are travelling

Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and the whole north are a different country as far as this goes. On the islands the threat to your trip is the drive rather than the flight. The SS186, SS113, SS118 and sections of the A19 were closed during the worst week of July. Palermo airport has not closed for fire this year, whatever the search results suggest: that story is from 2023. Catania closed in early July but from Etna ash, not fire. Olbia did suspend operations on 11 July with arrivals diverted to Cagliari and Alghero. No fire disruption was reported at any Sicilian or Sardinian port.

Advice in force: Island-wide fire pre-alert in Sicily. The Sicilian regional civil protection department has been running an orange pre-alert rather than a red alert, covering almost the whole island on 2 August and all nine provinces for 4 August, with the danger rated medium across most of the territory and low in Ragusa and Siracusa. Red fire alerts on the island were a mid-July pattern, not the current one. (as of 2026-08-03)
Advice in force: Top heat-health warning for Palermo and Catania. The health ministry's level three heat warning applies to Palermo and Catania for 2, 3 and 4 August, with perceived temperature at or above 40C. This is a heat warning, not a fire alert, and the two are easy to confuse in reporting. (as of 2026-08-03)
Advice in force: Daily water-bomber activity in Sardinia. Water bombers and helicopters worked fires in the Sassarese and Nuorese on 1 and 2 August, including Bono, Bottida, Padru and Teti, with an evening callout at Ozieri.
