Major wildfires in Portugal right now
No national forest ban is posted today, and the fires that are taking the effort are all in the north-east
On days of high rural fire danger the government can declare a national alert that bans walking, cycling and driving inside forest areas and on the tracks that cross them. No such measure is posted on prociv.gov.pt this morning. The standing notice there is Aviso 12, on rural fire danger, issued on 1 July and still marked active. The ban arrives with the day rather than before it, so check the site the morning you plan a day in the woods, not the night before.
Twenty-one occurrences were on the national register at about ten this morning, eight of them still em curso, the active phase. The largest is at Cabeça Boa, in the Torre de Moncorvo area of Bragança, with 231 firefighters and 71 vehicles. The fire at Moimenta e Montouto in Vinhais, which led the register yesterday, has come down to em resolução, the phase where crews have the upper hand, though 205 firefighters and 74 vehicles are still on it.
The fire at Ervões, in the Valpaços area of Vila Real, has been on the register since 28 July and is still there in vigilância, the watching phase, with one firefighter and one vehicle assigned to it. Trás-os-Montes is farming country rather than a resort area, so if you have a rural stay booked around Valpaços or in the hills above Chaves, contact the owner directly. Damage is patchy village by village, rural lanes through burnt ground are rough going, and smoke can hang about for days after the flames have gone.
