What happened

Fires west of Madrid merged into a single front of roughly 45,000 hectares spanning the Madrid, Ávila and Toledo regions — reported as the worst blaze in the Madrid region's history, with 88,000–100,000 people evacuated or confined. Nearly 3,000 personnel, hundreds of vehicles and more than 20 aircraft are deployed, with crews joining from Greece, Italy and Portugal. Continuing 40 °C heat is prolonging the emergency.
