Longobucco, Sila Greca Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

Short answer: Cosenza Channel reported at midday on 14 August that a fire had developed by the municipal cemetery at Longobucco, in the Sila Greca, on the slope directly facing the inhabited centre, in the ground where the Macrocioli and the Trionto valleys meet. Four ground teams made up of Vigili del Fuoco and Calabria Verde staff were working it under a director of firefighting operations, with Canadair water drops overhead, in ground the report describes as steep and thickly vegetated. Calabria Diretta News reported the following day, 15 August, that the fire had started the previous morning, that the operation had run for more than ten hours, and that the column of smoke was visible from the Piana di Sibari and from the coast near Capo Trionto, several kilometres away. Both reports say the same thing about why it matters: the closeness of the flames to the houses of Longobucco is the main worry, because vegetation runs straight into the built-up edge of the village. Neither report records anyone moved out of their home, and neither names a road closure.
