Gargano Peninsula (Puglia) Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

Fires have hit the Gargano coast twice in a week, and Peschici and Vieste are both in the affected strip.

Short answer: Trips are going ahead. Roads and beaches that closed during the fires have reopened, and the tourists taken off the coast at Peschici on 26 July went back to their accommodation within days. But fresh fires broke out on 31 July at Vieste, Cagnano Varano and San Marco in Lamis, so treat this as a place where your plans may change at short notice rather than one to cancel.

What is happening

A fire that started inland of Peschici on 26 July ran through pine and scrub to the bays on the coast, closing the Peschici–Vieste coast road and forcing swimmers and campers off the beaches, some of them taken out by sea. Roads reopened within a day, but fresh fires broke out across the peninsula on 31 July at Vieste, Cagnano Varano and San Marco in Lamis. Separately, fires in neighbouring Molise closed the SS 16 and the Adriatic main line for several hours on 26 July.

What it means if you are travelling

The Gargano is open and holidays are going ahead, but this is a headland where a single fire can shut the only coast road and turn a twenty-minute drive into a long inland detour. Book with that in mind, and know which fallback you actually have. Behind the north coast road there is one: the SS 89 between Peschici and Vieste, which is what the buses used on 26 July. On the south side of the headland there is not. The SS 89 between Mattinata and Vieste has been shut by a rockfall since 5 December 2025 and no authority has signposted a route around it. Ring your campsite or holiday village on the morning you travel rather than relying on a website. Ferries to the Tremiti islands were not reported disrupted.

Reopened: Beaches, campsites and holiday villages between Peschici and Vieste. Cleared on 26 July as the fire reached the bays; several hundred people were moved and some were taken off the beaches by coast guard boats, with around 300 brought round to Vieste by sea and put up in council buildings. Peschici's mayor said afterwards that tourists had returned to their accommodation. (as of 2026-07-28)
Reopened: Coast road between Peschici and Vieste (SP 52). Closed on 26 July while the fire was burning, with local buses diverted onto the SS 89 between Peschici and Vieste. Reopened once the fire was out and traffic across the Gargano was reported back to normal on 27 July. (as of 2026-07-27)
Still closed: SS 89 Garganica between Mattinata and Vieste. A long-standing rockfall closure, unrelated to this summer's emergencies. A boulder came down onto the carriageway at Ripe Rosse near Mattinata on 5 December 2025 and Anas shut the road between kilometre 105 and kilometre 144, about forty kilometres. Regione Puglia said on 29 July 2026 that it had approved an agreement with Anas and the Agenzia del Demanio putting Anas in charge of the works on the cliff, with 1.31 million euros committed and no reopening date. No signposted alternative has been published for the whole stretch. The other road between the two towns is the SP 53 along the coast, past Baia delle Zagare and Vignanotica. (as of 2026-07-29)
Reopened: SS 693 dei Laghi di Lesina e Varano at Cagnano Varano. Anas closed a stretch on 26 July and signposted a diversion. Roads across the Gargano were reported reopened the following day; a fire flared again on the same hillside on 31 July but no further closure of this road was reported. (as of 2026-07-27)
Reopened: New fires on 31 July at Vieste, Cagnano Varano and San Marco in Lamis. Fire broke out in the Carabella pine wood behind Lungomare Europa at Vieste, next to a hotel, and some houses there were cleared. A farm stay near San Marco in Lamis was evacuated with about twenty people inside, and water bombers also worked the hills above Lake Varano. The Vieste fire was under control the same day and no road or rail closure was reported. (as of 2026-07-31)
Advice in force: Fires still starting across the peninsula. Another fire at Vieste on 3 August was put out quickly. The Foggia prefecture has set up a standing technical committee on Gargano fires, covering Peschici, Vieste, Cagnano Varano and San Nicandro, most of which are being treated as deliberate.
