Valmadrera and Monte Moregallo Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

The fire on Monte Moregallo has been burning since the afternoon of 4 August. The lakeside road between Pare di Valmadrera and Onno is shut, and that is the part that changes your day.

Short answer: Lecco and Bellagio are open and working. What has changed is one road. The SP583 Lariana is closed between Pare di Valmadrera and Onno di Oliveto Lario because of the risk of debris coming down, and the tunnel at Pare is sealed off for the same reason. Traffic for Bellagio and Oliveto Lario is going round by the SP46 through Valbrona, which is a long detour in August. Prima Lecco reported two active fronts on the evening of 5 August, one above the SP583 and one on the western slope above Valmadrera, both at a distance from housing. No evacuation has been reported. Canadair aircraft and two regional helicopters have been working the fire, loading water from the lake near Abbadia.

The SP583 Lariana

Closed between Pare di Valmadrera and Onno di Oliveto Lario, with the tunnel at Pare sealed off for rockfall risk. The way round is the SP46 through Valbrona.

Lecco and Bellagio themselves

Both towns are open and neither was the fire zone. What is affected is the road between them on the eastern shore.

No evacuation reported

Prima Lecco reported both fronts at a distance from housing on the evening of 5 August. Nobody has been reported moved out.

Walking on the Moregallo

The mountain is being worked from the air. Leave the paths above the Lariana alone until the fire service has finished.
