Popoli Terme and Monte Morrone Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

The Abruzzo regional civil protection agency said on 13 August that the Monte Morrone fire is circoscritto, with the remaining flames held inside the burnt ground and the inhabited areas to be treated as safe. Aircraft were still working it on 14 August and the mountain is no place to walk.

Short answer: The fire started on Sunday 9 August in the territory of Roccacasale, on Monte Morrone, and ran downhill towards Corfinio and Popoli Terme through the week. On Thursday 13 August the Agenzia Regionale di Protezione Civile of the Abruzzo region published its own statement that the fire in the Roccacasale and Corfinio territories was attualmente circoscritto, that the residual flames were contained inside the area already burned, and that the inhabited areas were to be considered safe. It added that anything saying otherwise should be treated as unfounded, which is unusually direct and is the reason this page now follows it rather than the reporting from earlier the same day. Notizie d'Abruzzo and Il Pescara carried the morning bulletin in the same terms, sotto controllo e circoscritto. Work has not stopped. Two Canadair and two regional helicopters were flying it on Friday 14 August with about twenty firefighters, ten vehicles, civil protection volunteers and soldiers of the ninth Alpini regiment on the ground opening access routes. No evacuation and no road closure has been reported at Roccacasale, Corfinio or Popoli Terme, and Corfinio opened its municipal operations centre to coordinate the response.
