Manfredonia, Lago Salso Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

Reeds burned across the wetland south of Manfredonia on Tuesday 11 August, next to the Oasi Lago Salso nature reserve. A council assessor told people to stay away from the burning ground.

Short answer: Giornale di Puglia reported on Tuesday 11 August that fire had taken hold in a large stretch of reedbed south of Manfredonia, close to the Oasi Lago Salso reserve, with crews working it while the report was filed. Generoso Rignanese, an assessor on Manfredonia council, asked people not to go near the affected area. No evacuation is reported and no road closure is reported for that fire. The same day, and about fifteen kilometres north east of it, a separate and larger fire ran through pasture and scrub on the edge of Monte Sant'Angelo along the road to the Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano. ANSA reported that the provincial road SP 56 to Pulsano was closed to traffic for safety while two Canadair, a helicopter, fire crews, ARIF staff and civil protection volunteers worked on it. Pierpaolo d'Arienzo, the mayor of Monte Sant'Angelo, said the fires along the Pulsano road had started on several fronts at once and that everything pointed to them having been set deliberately. Puglia's regional civil protection has published nothing naming either fire, so neither carries an official stage.
