Two separate fire stories: the eight Mediterranean communes strung along the southern coast, and — far larger — the Gironde fire north of the Arcachon Basin, burning since 22 July, which has forced mass evacuations around Bordeaux and closed the A63. The heat makes it worse this week: up to 40 °C is forecast onto the south-west, while 20 départements sit under yellow canicule vigilance. The Med fire coast itself stays cooler (30–34 °C) under sea air.
Daily forecast maximums, Tuesday 28 July to Monday 3 August, hottest city first. Wednesday is the peak of the current pulse — near 38–39 °C from the south-west up through Paris to Alsace — before a brief dip and a second surge into the weekend, with Lyon heading towards 39–40 °C by Monday. Cities with an ember dot are on the wildfire arc; note how much cooler they stay than the inland belt.
