Neufchâtel-Hardelot and Dannes Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

The préfecture du Pas-de-Calais declared the Mont Saint-Frieux and Dannes fires fixé on Friday 14 August and the perimeter secured. Nobody has said they are out, and the prefectural order shutting the dune forest massifs is still in force.

Short answer: The beach and the resort are not the problem here, the dunes behind them are. Several starts ran together in the dune massif between Dannes and Neufchâtel-Hardelot early on the afternoon of Wednesday 12 August and burned along a perimeter of more than seven kilometres. On Friday 14 August the préfecture du Pas-de-Calais said the fires on the Mont Saint-Frieux and Dannes sectors were fixé and the perimeter secured, with the command post kept open to run the work on the ground. Fixé means the fire has stopped moving. It does not mean it is out, and nobody has used éteint. The prefectural order banning access to the dune forest massif covers Camiers, Condette, Dannes, Neufchâtel-Hardelot and Saint-Etienne-au-Mont, and was extended on the Friday to the Merlimont massif, so walking and cycling in the dunes is the part of a Côte d'Opale week to drop. The campsite question has an answer now and it is a good one: about 1,200 people were taken off the Camping Cristal d'Opale at Camiers on the Wednesday afternoon and were authorised back to their pitches that same evening. Ten firefighters were slightly hurt and none was taken to hospital. One house was destroyed. The cause has not been established and the Boulogne-sur-Mer prosecutor has opened an investigation.

Boulogne-sur-Mer and Wimereux are north of the burnt ground and were not named in any of the closures.
If the plan was a dune walk, swap it for the cliffs at Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez, which are outside the closed massifs.
Le Touquet, south of Camiers, is reachable without going through the closed forest, but check your route before you set off rather than following a satnav through the dunes.
