Megara, Vilia and the coast road to Corinth Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

The fire that started in Boeotia on 31 July has spread south and west into the hills above Megara and Vilia, and on 3 August it was still burning on a fourth day with fronts near Psatha and Kandili.

Short answer: This is the western half of the largest fire Greece is fighting this summer, and it is not over. Fronts were still active on 3 August north east of Psatha and at Kandili, with crews working to keep flames away from Vilia and off the slopes above Megara, a town of about thirty thousand people. Over a hundred homes have been reported destroyed around Porto Germeno. If you are driving between Athens and Corinth or the Peloponnese, check your route on the day: the motorway and the old coast road run along the bottom of this fire ground and closures have come and gone. Do not plan walking, cycling or beach days on the Alepochori and Psatha stretch of the Gulf of Corinth. Athens itself, its airport and the Athens Riviera are a different matter and are functioning normally.
