South east Kefalonia: Kateleios and Markopoulo Wildfire Risk: Should I Travel?

A fire that broke out in the Pastra area overnight into Sunday 2 August spread fast across the south east of Kefalonia and forced six villages towards Argostoli, hotels in Kateleios among them.

Short answer: This is the corner of Kefalonia that runs from Kateleios round to Skala and Poros, and it is the part of the island where the fire has been. Six settlements were told to leave for Argostoli during the night, and tourist accommodation at Kateleios was cleared. Argostoli itself, the airport and the ferry links were not the subject of any evacuation alert. If you are booked into the south east of the island in the next fortnight, contact your accommodation directly rather than assuming either way. If you are elsewhere on Kefalonia, or on Ithaca, this has not been your fire, though smoke and helicopter activity have been visible from a long way off.
