A large fire that started inland in Boeotia has burned down to the sea around Porto Germeno, and this stretch of coast north-west of Athens is not a place to be this weekend.

Short answer: If you are booked into Porto Germeno, Psatha, Alepochori, Agios Vasileios or the villages around Domvraina, do not travel there and contact your accommodation before you set off. Athens itself is running normally and its airport is unaffected, so a trip built around the city, the islands or the airport does not need cancelling. Fokida further west, around Eupalio, has had its own fire and evacuations, so treat the whole north shore of the Gulf of Corinth as unsettled until the wind drops.

What is happening

A fire that started inland in Boeotia on the morning of Friday 31 July ran south through pine forest, over Mount Kithairon and down to the sea on the north shore of the Gulf of Corinth. People were taken off the beach at Agios Vasileios by boat because the road out had gone, and a second group was lifted off the shore at Porto Germeno the next morning. Homes were lost at Porto Germeno and along that coast, and the fire was still running on separate fronts at Veniza and Psatha on 2 August.

What it means if you are travelling

This is a mainland fire about seventy to eighty kilometres north-west of Athens, not an island one. Athens and its airport were running normally throughout, and the coast in question is a small stretch of holiday villages that very few visitors pass through by accident. If you are booked at Porto Germeno, Psatha, Alepochori, Agios Vasileios or the Domvraina villages, do not travel there and speak to your host first. If you are driving between Athens and the Peloponnese, check your route on the morning rather than the night before.

Still closed: Villages around Porto Germeno and Psatha evacuated by 112 alert. Evacuation orders were issued through the night of 31 July and into 1 August for Agia Paraskevi, Agios Nektarios and Kryo Pigadi, alongside earlier alerts for Porto Germeno, Livadostra and Domvraina. Still closed: Beaches at Agios Vasileios and Porto Germeno cut off by land, people taken out by boat. More than 200 people were evacuated by sea from Agios Vasileios, about 80km north-west of Athens, and a further group was lifted off the beach at Porto Germeno by coast guard and fire service vessels after road access was lost.
