Portugal's multi-front fire week: the Guarda blaze and dozens of smaller fires

What happened

A fire that broke out in the early afternoon of 27 July at Rochoso e Monte Margarida, east of Guarda city, was still listed as active by public fire monitors on 28 July and reported by local media as extending towards Almeida and Sabugal. Morning reports put the response at roughly 280-330 personnel with dozens of vehicles and at least one aerial asset; five firefighters were reported lightly injured. A separate live monitor showed six active Portuguese incidents and about 700 personnel across the country early on 28 July, so this page treats Portugal as an inland-route caution rather than a single confirmed national emergency.

What it means if you're travelling

Do not rely on stale road-closure reports for the A25/EN16 or the Vilar Formoso corridor. I found older A25/EN16 closure references in search results that did not match this 2026 incident closely enough, so the safer advice is to check Infraestruturas de Portugal, GNR announcements and ANEPC/Fogos.pt immediately before using the border route.
