France Campervan and Motorhome Wildfire Risk

A wildfire-season planning page for motorhomes, campervans, caravans and campsite stays in France.

Route rule: treat Atlantic coast, Bordeaux, Landes, Pyrenees and Mediterranean routes as check-before-you-commit areas in hot, dry or windy weather. A van gives you flexibility, but only if you keep an exit route and avoid committing to forested dead-end roads.

How to plan the route

Keep two exits

Prefer stops where you can leave in two directions. Avoid narrow forest tracks, one-way ravines and cliff roads during high-risk days.

Arrive early

Reach campsites and aires in daylight so you can see exits, reception notices, assembly points and smoke direction.

Move before smoke traps you

If smoke settles in a valley or campsite, moving early is safer than waiting until everyone tries to leave together.

Pack for a sudden stop

Keep passports, medicines, water, shoes, chargers and pet kit ready in one grab bag.
